At just five foot five, Devon Aoki does not exactly measure up
to most super models. Then again, her jaw-dropping beauty - her
doll-like incongruously freckled Anglo-Japanese freckles and lavish
tawny locks - isn't like other models', either. It was her very
uniqueness that entranced no less an authority on beauty than Karl
Largerfeld, who launched her career in 1999 by casting her in a
Chanel ad campaign. "My height presented a challenge when I first
entered the industry," Aoki says. "But ultimately, it's been the
key to any success I've had. I found people who were not so concerned
with how tall I was but my overall look and the person I am."
Aoki's stature has one - somewhat inevitable - drawback: She often
has a hard time finding clothes small enough to fit her. "Though
if I find something that's too big and I can't resist," she says,
"I do have a great tailor who doctors it." Otherwise, Aoki seems
unconcerned about her unusual status in the fashion world. "I think
it's much more important to celebrate your individuality than to
fantisize about something that isn't yours."
