excerpt from article
" . . . In the middle of this relative mindlessness sat an arresting
sight: a small girl, barely older than her mid-teens, was engrossed
in a book. Stamped on the cover was the title, Self Reliance
and Other Essays, by Ralph Waldo Emerson. So surprised by this
intellectual outbreak, in the middle of rainbow serpent trousers,
quilted two-pieces, printed chiffon dresses and killer stiletto
heels, I almost tripped over her tiny feet.
It turned out that this bluestocking was, in fact, Lagerfeld's
favourite, Devon Aoki, the half-Japanese 17-year-old who has become
one of the faces of the house of Chanel during the last couple of
seasons. She's in high school in the US, had just flown in for the
parade and was due back at school within a day, so she was taking
a little down time to study.
She didn't want to sound like a complete nerd, she said, but she
likes school, is conscious of getting a proper education in the
middle of modelling mayhem, and is very careful about what she does.
"I try to stay away from things that might hurt me," she said.
"This business can be confusing if you're young."
No kidding. I was confused out front again when a pocket Venus
erupted down the runway and it turned out to be Aoki in full paint
and attitude. "
