Over the past five years Devon Aoki has become Karl Lagerfeld's
muse garnered the support of the fashion elite and played a major
role in transforming the aesthetic standards of the industry. Not
bad for a 19-year-old. With a face that defies conventional notions
of nationality, Aoki has used her love of the arts and an unabashed
outspokenness to shake up the fashion world. "When I started modeling
I didn't know that it was ok for me to be a voice in the creative
process. Being a model is not about being mute or about being a
coat hanger. It's about being someone with a voice and having a
passion and being part of a creative team. You have the ability
to be a part of the collaboration. I've definitely learned that
its ok to have a strong voice " says Aoki, with characteristic spiritedness.
Mind you, she has every reason to be happy: since she moved to New
York a year ago, life's just gotten better and better. "I feel at
home in New York~" she says. "For some strange reason it feels so
right to me. I love being able to get a burger at 3 in the morning.
I love that the norm is not the norm. I love the cultural mixing
pot. I definitely feel my happiest when I'm in New York." that the
city of limitless possibility has captured Aoki's imagination is
no surprise: the girl is reaching for the skies. "I haven't really
given much thought to what's next for my modeling career as long
as I still enjoy myself and I'm interested. Being a model is fabulous
because you can move into other things so easily. But there's so
much I'm interested in. It just takes time to grow in any field
from art to fashion; it's not about hit or miss, success or failure.
Being able to do things just going for it is what's important to
me." Devon Aoki Japanese- German and English model-and daughter
of famed international playboy and Benihana founder Rocky Aoki graces
our cover this month and shows off the latest from Ralph Lauren
and Iceberg.
