HISTORY
After moving between London, Malibu and New York as a child, Aoki's
family settled in London when she was 13. According to legend, it
all started for Aoki when a friend of the family asked her to do
a shoot. Her godmother, Fran Cutler, showed the pictures to her
great friend, Kate Moss, who took them to her model agency, Storm,
who promptly signed Aoki up. At Moss's request, Aoki was chosen
for a Primal Scream video clip, and the two girls shared the cover
of US magazine INTERVIEW's 30th Anniversary edition. That's
where designer Jeremy Scott noticed her quirky look. He's been quoted
as saying, "I had to, had to, have her! I needed this baby-woman."
Scott got his wish, a new 14-year-old muse. Aoki was the first out
on the catwalk for his Rich White Woman collection. From there,
she went to Chanel, where designer Karl Largerfeld pronounced her
"the great beauty of the next century." Despite all the
fame and glamour of the fashion world, Aoki continued with her schooling
and didn't hesistate to cancel or refuse a shoot for the sake of
her studies. Films are in her sights now.
HEARD SAYING:
"I'm very different. I have a quirky strange look. I believe
beauty is everywhere and you can't impose boundaries on it."

Note: a few facts seem to be wrong in this article - Devon's
Interview 30th Edition cover was in 1999, whereas Jeremy Scott's
Rich White Woman collection took place in October 1997. Scott is
quoted in an Interview in The Face as having seen Devon in The Face.
She would have also been 17 in 1999.
