Anita Sarko: One thing that I laugh about
is that nowadays every model calls themselves a supermodel.
Devon: I think that people just add the "super" on there to put
a little more life into the word. It sort of makes us superheroes,
in fact! But I think it's kind of silly. Because it's not like we're
curing cancer or doing anything difficult. I don't consider myself
a supermodel. I'm just a young little model from nowhere.
AN: Where were you born?
D: I was born in New York and I lived there until I was nine.
Then I moved to California, lived in Malibu for a few years, and
I live in London now.
AN: Kate has kind of adopted you, right?
D: She's always been supersweet to me. She is one of the nicest
people I've ever met in my life, and I'm not just saying that. When
I first started modelling I felt kind of awkward. And she would
always make me feel really comfortable. I couldn't say a bad word
about her, because it wouldn't be true.
AS: Being the face of Chanel was your big
coming out, right?
D: That was the first major thing that I did. I think Karl Lagerfeld
picks his girls really well; we're all part of a new breed of models.
Karl is partly responsible for making the fashion world more diversified,
because he takes chances with models. When I first started I got
shot down. I'm five foot and I'm quirky looking. I'm not stereotypically
beautiful. My mom's half-German, half-English, and my dad is Japanese.
People have this cookie-cutter image of what a model should be,
and all these requirements - and I barely have any of them. [laughs]
I guess people fear change. But people like Karl who weren't scared
to move on gave me a chance.
AN: So are you in the twelfth grade now?
D: Yes. It's my senior year now, and I want to start the year
off strong. Last year I missed 50 percent of the school year working.
They were about ready to kill me. I have to make sure I don't neglect
my schooling. [laughs] I have to be a good student. My main
focus right now is to do well in school. Modelling has always been
like a second job, almost like a hobby.
AN: Do you think you want to go to college
straight away? Or do you want to model as long as you can, and then
go, like Christy Turlington?
D: I always want to have school to fall back on, because I don't
know how long I'm going to last as a model. No one ever really knows.
